Blog post by the mother
Wednesday is the day of the big weekly market in St Remy. We did our research and decided that, although the market supposedly started at 7am, we would aim for the more achievable time of 8.30. Miraculously we achieved our goal and found ourselves in town, on time and without too much difficulty in finding a carpark (thanks to Pascale who told us about the free local carpark when we first arrived at the villa). As it turns out 7am would have been much too early because the stall holders were still setting up when we started walking towards the Hotel de Ville. Some of the streets were still looking decidedly sleepy.
However when we got to the square in front of the Hotel de Ville it was a different story. The food stalls there were set up and in full swing. Within minutes we had been offered 'un gouter' or a taste of macarons, cheese and fruit.
The stalls all looked amazing with their produce all set out very enticingly.
Winner of the most amazing looking stall went to the olive stall. So many different olives as well as other dried fruits and lentil and chickpea salads. The older lady in the photo was buying some tapenade but while she waited to for it to be weighed out she also managed to fit in a good feed of olives.
There were stalls throughout the village. In the Place de la Republic there were stalls selling all sorts of non-food items - linen, clothing, shoes, records and souvenirs. The Provencal pottery is wonderfully bright and colourful - I just couldn't work out how to get it all home without incurring a lot of breakages and/or a hefty postage fee.
Likewise the bag shop was also interesting and colourful.
After all our shopping we needed a break and cold drinks and coffees at the Café de la Place. Please note eldest son's new sunglasses of which he is very proud. We are ignoring any comments that they make him look like a dodgy member of CHiPs or worse.
